Radio Hour with Guapdad 4000
The Oakland-raised MC Guapdad 4000 came up as one of the innovators of Scam Rap, a subgenre featuring lyrics that offer instructionals for 21st century hustles and document the trials & glories of that lifestyle.
Guapdad’s latest album, 1176, was an artistic breakthrough. While there were still a couple Scam Rap tracks, Guap also goes deep on his Black and Filipino heritage, the trauma of displacement, and the complexities of familial relationships.
Fresh off his recent tour with Wale, Guap and host Elia Einhorn caught up to discuss balancing braggadocio with vulnerability, the reason he finally stopped scamming, and what he’s learned from the celebrated artists in his inner circle like Thundercat and Drake.
